Install VLC Media Player in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal!

Well, I don't think anyone would want an introduction to VLC media player. Although I'd still prefer MPLayer or SMPlayer back-end yet VLC is one of the most popular + fully featured multimedia players that is widely in use nonetheless. One good thing about it is that, once installed, VLC plays almost all the codecs known to mankind :P and lets you do things such as ...

*. Enhance video and audios with various filters.

*. Add/Change brightness/hue... easily.

*. Powerful built-in Equalizer.

*. Heck... it even has the ability to encode videos/audios as well.

*. Web casting support.

*. Play online video channels.

*. Build albums and manage playlists easily... are just a very few of its main features to name.

So, let's cut the cra* and let me humble tell you how to install VLC player in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. Now there are two ways that you can do this. First is using the "Software Center" which lets you do this graphically. In that case, from the top left corner, in the search box on the panel, just enter the following name - "ubuntu software center".

After the software center is open, just search for "vlc" and simply follow the instructions on the screen.

But if that looks like a bit of a work :P, then you can easily install VLC in Ubuntu by issuing the below command in your Terminal.
sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc
That's it. Enjoy!.

@Shivaram,

Sorry about that pal... MSS2 is codec within the WMV9 codec family. And unfortunately VLC does not support this :/... from the beginning.

Other than "MSS2" I think it can play most other WMV versions. So, sorry about that.... but you can use mplayer or SMPlayer in these cases..

for mplayer use..

sudo apt-get install mplayer-gui

for smplayer use...

sudo apt-get install smplayer

good luck.

@Shivaram,

Okay... MPLayer or SMPlayer should be able to play those files but there's another method, not sure if it'll enable VLC to play those WMV.. but you can try it.

First download the archive from below link

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/windows-essential-20071007.zip

Extract it and copy the content to

/usr/local/lib/codecs/

For that you'll have to have administrative privileges.

After adding them try playing those WMV in VLC, if it fails again... well then you can try uninstalling and installing VLC again, but I don't think it'll work...

Remember, VLC developers do not support MSS2 codec for some reason. That's the issue. Hope this helped.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

vlc: Depends: vlc-nox (= 1.1.9-1ubuntu1.3) but 1.1.9-1ubuntu1.3 is to be installed

how can i resolve this problem,

Gayan said...

@mahi,

try the below command...

sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc vlc-nox

btw, did you try to install just "vlc"?. "vlc-nox" is the command line version of VLC (yikes!). anyhow, hope this fixed your issue.

And remember, whenever you encounter something like this, most of the time, you can just put the "missing" package with "apt-get install ..." as a fix.
