How To Install IDM In Ubuntu Linux 10.10

IDM or internet download manager is one of the best commercial applications that you can use to download files  many many times faster than the default built in utility that comes with the Microsoft windows OS versions. But let's say you're and addicted IDM user who switched to Ubuntu 10.10 maverick meerkat recently, then you'll most probably miss that great little app!.

A real screenshot of IDM in Linux!
And since it is a well known fact that MS Windows applications won't run in Linux.... well not quite true actually!, you can run some of them, even better than they run on Messy windows ;-)!. Although I'm not going to write a post about what that application is all about or how it does that but will give the basic understanding.

It is called the Wine project for linux. After installing it on Linux, it'll let you run most of the softwares that are built to run on MS windows on your newly installed linux distro!. So before installing IDM, you have to first set up wine on ubuntu 10.10. Now first...

1. Don't be afraid and start your Linux terminal first

2. Then issue the command below:

sudo apt-get install wine

3. Now when asked give your password and it'll automatically install all the necessary packages (Note- this may take a while since the it is a little over a hundred MB's.....)

After the installation finishes it'll add its own menus to the Gnome/KDE desktop task bar menus for ease of access. Now whenever you want to install a ".exe" file under Linux just right click on it and you'll see a newly added menu called “Open With Wine Windows Program Loader”.

Now just go to your IDM downloaded package (setup file), make sure to have a bit older version 5.18 (build8) or lower one, it may or may not be able to run the latest version....

1. Right click on the setup file and from the menu choose the above stated "Open With Wine Windows Program Loader" from the menu.

2. Now as in windows just follow the instructions and when in confusion just select all the default settings

3. Click finish at the end.

Now if everything went well you'll see that "beautiful" (hurray!!!) looking IDM icon on the Notification area on linux. Now functions such as automatic URL grabbing might not work but you can always copy and paste that URL manually into the IDM GUI or use the "Drop Target" feature.

That's how you install IDM in Ubuntu Linux 10.10

@vijaykumar,

Well I honestly don't think there are any IDM equivalents for GNU/Linux (or ones that I'm aware of anyway), after considering the IDM's awesome features and usability, etc.

However you can try Jdownloader which is pretty powerful and even has features such as YouTube downloading abilities, etc.

I wrote a review about it in my new blog which you can access by using the below link. Good luck.

please tell me how to install idm in Ubuntu 11.04..give me any suggestion or link

Gayan said...

@Anonymous,

I don't recommed using IDM in GNU/Linux anymore because we have decent alternatives plus even if you get IDM to work under Ubuntu (GNU/Linux) most features won't work like in Windows.

Thus you're better off with an alternative one like the above mentioned "Jdownloader" or "uGet" (extremely simple one but jdownloader is really powerful) for instance.

Besides I use Ubuntu 11.10 these days and don't use Wine at all either. Sorry about that friend.

Though installed, I need to intigerate it with Firefox, how could I ?

Gayan said...

@Chanchal Raj,

You can try to do so by using its "Settings" window and choose something like, re-integrate Firefox and locating the Firefox web browser executable file (usually in /bin or /usr/bin) manually.

Though I doubt that it would work ...

@gayan
is there any need tu integrate JDownloader with ubuntu???
or
its automatically integrated.

Gayan said...

@jejonx,

Hello there!,

Well, as long as Jdownloader is running, it should be able to pickup stuff from your clipboard.

However I forgot whether it automatically shows a dialog of its own (when you click on a download link in Firefox for instance) while trying to download something (because of its heavy resource usage, I gave up using it).

However, I think you have to manually put the video links such as YouTube when downloading.

But that being said, it's an extremely features rich tool which might be worth trying first.

Hope this answers your question. :D.

Is there any Linux download manager that has Auto URL grab function. am failing to download videos on TouTube. Please help me out

Gayan said...

@Thomah2000,

As I've mentioned in the above comments, if you want YouTube grab function, then you should use something like the "jdownloader" (it also supports URL grabbing too, if I remember correctly).

"uget" is also pretty decent, but it doesn't support YouTube video downloading though.

sudo apt-get install minitube

IDM is unable to connect to internet using port 80. Any ideas?

Gayan said...

@Renold,

I'm sorry mate, have no idea ...

Aditya Bhardwaj said...

Try installing Internet download manager's old version 5.05 through wine in Ubuntu .. Though it doesn't integrate with the browsers of Ubuntu, but will definitely connect to internet.. Try and copy the download link and then use it through "add URL" option in IDM .. Later version of IDM's are not supported as they don't connect to internet through Wine ..

@Aditya,

Thanks for the update mate, appreciate it :).
