PowerAMP - A Powerful Music Player for Your Android OS!

Unlike many other mobile operating systems (especially iOS), Android for some reason ain't the best of its kind when it comes to dealing with multimedia files. From a fully featured, powerful OS to easy to use GUI... open-source framework, etc... it's all good, except for some of the issues while playing certain kinds of multimedia files.

But as the case with open-source or GNU software, there aren't any shortage of available applications nonetheless. So, if for some reason you don't like your current music player in your Android phone or Tablet, then go to the market place and search for "something" that suits your needs the most.

In that sense, if you're willing to spend few bucks ($5 actually) there is an excellent music player for Android called PowerAMP!. It comes with a simplified interface which is very easy "understand" and lot of other useful features such as ...

*. A 10-band Equalizer.

*. User friendly buttons.

*. Plays a number of audio formats by default such as:  mp3, mp4/m4a, alac, ogg, wma, flac, wav, ape, wv, and tta.

*. Adjust bass and treble separately (other than using the above mentioned Equalizer).

*. Automatic album art downloading.

*. Few different themes.

*. Tag editor.

*. Search for files with ease.

*. Android OS version must be 2.1 or higher.

But the only drawback is, you cannot listen to any podcasts with it.

But the rest assured this is a pretty powerful player nonetheless. Although you don't have to purchase it first, they do let you download a trial which can be obtained from this market page. If you find it to be quite useful, then you can pay the "price" afterward :).

Install Nautilus Facebook Uploader in Ubuntu 10.10/11.04

Facebook is becoming an important part of most of our lives. And as a GNU/Linux user, don't you think it would be nice to have the ability to upload your pictures, video directly from the Nautilus file manager to Facebook??. If so, you should try the Nautilus Facebook Uploader.

Main features...

*. Upload videos/pictures.

*. Upload to any album in your FB account.

*. Post directly to the wall.

*. Schedule uploads.

If you use Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04, the installation is pretty easy actually. All you gotta do is go and get the .deb package from here. And simply double click on it to install. That's it. The credit goes to the gnome-look.org developer (if you're using any other GNU/Linux distributions please get the source-code the developer page).

GRUB2 Bootloader Editor, Another Powerful Bootloader Editor for KDE!

Now I did post about another GRUB editor that can be used in Ubuntu but it was more drifted towards Gnome desktop. But to be fare to all the KDE geeks out there I though posting another editor (actually a KCModule - standard method for integrating various programs configuration options to KDE desktop) called the GRUB2 Bootloader Editor.

Now being a KDE based app, when comparing with the previous Gnome oriented application, you can see the difference. The G2BE comes with a lots of features which enables the users to completely change the way Grub boot loader operates.

*. Change the color of the Background/Foreground or make them transparent.

*. Apply different types of themes for GRUB.

*. Change the default screen resolution.

*. Time-out settings.

*. Change the Distribution names, etc... are just a few to name.

If you want to know how to install it in your GNU/Linux distribution, please visit this page. Enjoy!.

Subsonic, A Web Based Music Streamer (Can Handle Local Albums too)

Although personally I'm not a huge fan of cloud based computing or anything that believes in that "philosophy", but that's just me, if you like those technologies anyhow and looking for an excellent web-based music player that only requires you to have a decent web browser, then you should consider Subsonic.

Can easily change the "skin"...

One of the most useful things about this web based music streamer is that it re-encodes the audio files to a give bit-rate live!. Say that you have an internet connection with a usage limit, but still would like to listen to music without "burning" your usage limit, then Subsonic is an elegant solution. It is written in Java and you have to install the Java "engine" which integrate with the web browser, which only takes a second.

It has the ability to manage local music albums as well + from all the music it "grabs" from online sources, it'll also fetch things like album art, tag-editing, wikipedia information grabbing, Last.fm integration, pod casts support ..., heck, you can even download your favorite music directly to your PC or Mobile phone as well (currently supports iPhone, Android mobile devices and Microsoft Windows Phone 7).

So if you're interested, then go to this page and download the proper installer depending on your OS. Good luck!.

Install Synapse in Ubuntu, A Fully Featured Application Launcher for Linux

Synapse is an advanced, beautiful looking and easy to use application launcher for Gnome desktop (now fully supports Kwin too). Although we have other competitors such as Gnome-Do for instance, but still Synapse uses less system resources thus resulting quicker responding times which is one of the reasons of its popularity.

The new GUI

It comes with the very beautiful looking (3D and all that geeky stuff! ;-) ) GUI and lets you easily search for apps or recently used commands with ease as well. Even if you're not sure of the command that is supposed to launch an app, Synapse has the ability to guess and "reveal" it you (which is actually nothing new... even the standard Gnome 2+ launcher has that anyway).

A screenshot of the old GUI... still looking sexy :)

Not only applications and their commands but Synapse lets you even search for recently opened items via its GUI as well. For instance, if you want to quickly access one of the audio tracks that you recently played, then you can click on the "Audio" tab and search for that.

Although it has been a while since it was first introduced by the developer, but few days ago a new version is available which is 0.2.6 (at the moment) which brigs few major changes to the both GUI and the function it self such as ...

*. All new... even better looking Skin.

*. Click-able categories.

*. Mouse-scroll support for the app-list.

*. Drag and drop (now you can drag and drop apps directly from Synapse to other windows).

*. Stay on top of the windows by default.

*. KWin - KDE window manager support.

*. Loads faster than the predecessors....

So, if you use Ubuntu and wondering how to install it on your PC... then open your Terminal and issue the below command (using a PPA channel).

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:synapse-core/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install synapse
