How to Install Thunderbird 6.0 in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 10.10 and 10.04?

Yesterday Mozilla released the Firefox 6 version which is already available for Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04 users, although the "Natty users" will have to wait till it hits the official repositories. Anyhow, as usual, simultaneous to this release, Mozilla foundation has released their e-mail client called the Thunderbird 6.0 as well which was previously available as beta.

Since most know that with the upcoming Ubuntu 11.10, Canonical has decided to replace Evolution with Thunderbird, so 11.10 users will be getting it by default, but for the latter version, we gotta install it manually, it's pretty easy thanks to the dedicated PPA nonetheless.

Main features...

*. Based on the Mozilla's new Geko 6.0 engine (it's a kinda of a framework that lets developers develop applications that follows the web-standards with, somewhat, ease).

*. More secure, stable and importantly, as with Firefox 6 in GNU/Linux, it's a bit faster.

*. Many MS Windows oriented features and improvements (outlook e-mail importing fixes, Win7's jump list support, etc), who cares! :).

*. Few user interface enhancements.

*. Enhanced support for Ubuntu global menus... are among the main ones according to their release notes page.

Since the stable version 6 has hit the PPA (stable means the current official version) you can install Thunderbird 6.0 in Ubuntu 11.04, 10.10 and 10.04 by simply adding the PPA. For the whole procedure, please use the below commands (trying to act like a decent guy :D).

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/thunderbird-stable

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install thunderbird

How to Install Thunderbird 6.0 (beta) in Ubuntu Linux 11.04, 10.10 and 10.04?

Thunderbird, the free and one of the most popular email clients in the world will also receive rapid updates (new versions) in a much quicker cycle simultaneously with the Firefox Web browser which is obviously "inspired" by the Google Chrome, after seeing its success, I guess.

The current version of the Thunderbird email client is 5.0 which brought some major changes (Mozilla Gecko 5 engine), faster start up times, etc and was introduced very recently. But, even though the next upcoming version 6.0 is still at beta stage but thanks to the Ubuntu Mozilla team we can already install the 6.0 beta version in Ubuntu quite easily nonetheless. 

Since it's still in the beta stage there's nothing much to say about it but according to their release note page, it brings few new features such as ...

*. Added the support for Windows 7 Jump list support (which is very similar to the application menu indicator in Ubuntu) ... so you can access some of the main options of Thunderbird from the task-bar while minimized.

*. Few MS Outlook e-mail importing issues fixed.

*. Now has the ability to check whether it's the default e-mail client in GNU/Linux environment (pity actually... I mean, Mozilla is a GNU/GPL licensed application/community yet it took them this long to arrive at this).

As usual this beta release includes few bug fixes and few other GUI improvements and enhancements as well.

You can install Thunderbird 6.0 beta in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 10.10 and 10.04 by using the dedicated PPA channel. So as usual, just open your Terminal window and enter the below commands.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/thunderbird-next

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install thunderbird

But remember this is still in its beta stage so if you're concerned about the best possible level of security in your email client software, then you'd better off with the version 5 instead. Enjoy!.

Install Thunderbird in Ubuntu, Rock Your E-mails in GNU/Linux With this "BIRD"!

Both Firefox and Thunderbird are one of the most widely used applications in all sorts of operating systems. Everyone knows about Firefox, you know, it's a... wild animal... :(,  but for some reason, even some of the major Linux distributions tend to drop one of the most powerful e-mail clients available for GNU/Linux which is the Thunderbird.

This is not a criticism.. and I'm pretty sure they have their reasons... anyhow, Ubuntu does not come with it. In fact they decided to ship their OS with another pretty good e-mail client called Evolution. So, if you want to give a try for Thunderbird in Ubuntu 10.10 or 10.04, etc then simply open your Terminal and issue the below command to install it.

sudo apt-get install thunderbird

You can also install Thunderbird using the graphical software manager that comes with Ubuntu. To do so go to, Applications -> Ubuntu Software Center and search for "Thunderbird" and follow the instructions on the screen.
